How PDE5 Inhibitors Actually Work
Sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra) are phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors. They work by preventing the breakdown of cyclic GMP, which is the downstream signaling molecule produced by nitric oxide the primary vasodilatory signal that initiates an erection. What they don’t do is repair the vascular tissue that’s producing that response.
