PRP for Shoulder and Hip Pain

PRP for Shoulder and Hip Pain: What Dr. J Anti-Aging Clinic Offers Beyond the Knee

Most of the published PRP literature focuses on the knee it’s the most commonly treated joint and has the deepest evidence base. But joint pain affects shoulders, hips, ankles, and the spine with equal or greater impact on quality of life. At Dr. J Anti-Aging Clinic in 7300 Sand Lake Commons Blvd Ste 227 L, Orlando, FL 32819, we treat joints throughout the body with the same regenerative approach.

Here’s what the evidence shows for two of the most commonly treated non-knee joints we see.

PRP for Shoulder Pain

Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy

Rotator cuff tendinopathy chronic pain and inflammation in the tendons of the rotator cuff, often without complete tear is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain in adults over 40. It’s frustrating because it responds incompletely to rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatories for many patients.

PRP has a well-established role in tendinopathy treatment. Growth factors particularly PDGF and TGF-β directly stimulate tenocyte (tendon cell) proliferation and collagen remodeling. Multiple randomized trials have compared PRP with corticosteroid injection for tendinopathy and found that while cortisone produces faster short-term relief, PRP produces superior outcomes at 6 and 12 months. The regenerative effect outlasts the suppressive one.

Glenohumeral Osteoarthritis

Shoulder joint (glenohumeral) osteoarthritis is less common than knee OA but significantly impacts daily function reaching overhead, sleeping on the affected side, and lifting all become painful. PRP applied to the glenohumeral joint follows the same mechanism as knee injection: growth factor modulation of the joint environment, cartilage support, synovial fluid improvement.

AC Joint Pain

Acromioclavicular (AC) joint pain the joint at the top of the shoulder where the collarbone meets the shoulder blade is common in weightlifters, throwing athletes, and patients with a history of shoulder injuries. PRP injection into the AC joint provides targeted regenerative support where cortisone provides only temporary suppression.

SHOULDER Dr. J Anti-Aging Clinic PROTOCOL
All shoulder injections at Dr. J Anti-Aging Clinic are performed under image guidance (ultrasound) to ensure accurate intra-articular placement. Accurate placement is essential a misplaced injection delivers growth factors to the wrong tissue and produces inferior results. This is one of the key differentiators between physician-administered and non-physician-administered PRP.

PRP for Hip Pain

Hip Osteoarthritis

Hip osteoarthritis is the second most commonly treated joint in regenerative medicine after the knee. The hip joint bears the full weight of the upper body across every step making pain particularly debilitating. The same KL grading applies: Grade 2-3 hip OA represents the best window for regenerative intervention.

PRP for hip OA has shown consistent improvements in pain and function in clinical studies. The mechanism is identical to the knee: growth factors modulate the synovial environment, support chondrocyte activity, and reduce the inflammatory burden. Because the hip is a deeper joint, ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance for injection placement is particularly important.

Hip Labral and Bursitis-Related Pain

Hip labral irritation (degeneration of the cartilage rim surrounding the hip socket) and greater trochanteric bursitis (inflammation of the bursa on the outer hip) are two other common pain generators we treat with PRP. Labral support with PRP growth factors, and bursitis management with targeted growth factor injection rather than repeated cortisone, represent meaningful alternatives for patients with persistent hip pain.

Image-Guided

Accurate placement critical for PRP efficacy not all providers use guidance

Why Image Guidance Matters

This point deserves emphasis. PRP injections are only as good as where the growth factors land. For superficial joints like the knee, experienced hands can achieve accurate placement without imaging but for the hip, shoulder (glenohumeral), and spinal facet joints, image guidance is not optional if you want consistent results.

At Dr. J Anti-Aging Clinic, we use ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance for all injections. This ensures the growth factors are delivered precisely to the joint space not into adjacent soft tissue where they produce no articular benefit. Many PRP providers do not use imaging guidance. When comparing options, ask about guidance technique.

The Spine, Facet and SI Joint Injections

Spinal facet joint arthropathy degeneration of the small joints along the spine is an underappreciated cause of back and neck pain, particularly in adults over 50. Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain is a similarly under-addressed source of low back and buttock pain, often mistaken for lumbar disc disease.

PRP facet and SI joint injections provide regenerative support to joints that cortisone injections can only temporarily suppress. We treat lumbar facet disease, cervical facet arthropathy, and SI joint pain at Dr. J Anti-Aging Clinic with image-guided PRP injection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is shoulder PRP covered by insurance?

PRP injections for shoulder pain are generally not covered by most insurance plans, as they are classified as experimental. Coverage decisions vary; some plans cover image-guided injections separately from the PRP preparation. We discuss coverage and self-pay pricing at consultation.

Can I use PRP after a rotator cuff tear?

For partial rotator cuff tears, PRP applied to the tendon-bone interface can support healing and reduce pain. For complete tears requiring surgical repair, PRP may be used as an adjunct to surgery to enhance healing a growing practice in orthopedic surgery. We evaluate each case individually; complete tears generally require orthopedic surgical consultation.

Is hip PRP injection painful?

The hip is a deeper joint, and the injection itself takes longer than a knee injection due to guidance requirements. We use local anesthetic at the injection site. Most patients describe pressure during needle placement; the actual PRP injection typically causes minimal additional discomfort. Post-procedure soreness for 24 to 72 hours is common.
